Day-tripping: Brimfield Antique Flea Market

In the heart of Central Mass, our hotel is near many area events. One such event is the Brimfield Antiques Flea Market, also known as the Brimfield Flea Market, the Brimfield Antiques Fair, the Brimfield Antiques & Collectibles Shows, and the Brimfield Flea, depending on who you ask and what you search. Held three times each year, in May, July and September, this almost week-long event brings an estimated 50,000 people each year to many different fields, each with hundreds of vendors. There is truly something for everyone at this event. The Southbridge Hotel & Conference Center is an excellent place to relax after a day of shopping as the fields are approximately twelve miles away. Brimfield is located just west of the intersection of Route 84 and the Massachusetts Turnpike (Interstate 90).

The May event tends to be the busiest one. Perhaps it is because people have been cooped up in their houses/apartments all winter long and are itching to get out, or maybe it’s the beautiful New England May weather. The July event can be extremely hot – as the Brimfield summer heat can really reach its peak this month. September tends to be the quietest market. September is a great time to go if you’re a first timer as the crowds are less, the September weather is usually comfortable, and dealers are often more inclined to make some deals as they end the year.

You really need to do a little homework before heading out. There are many different fields – some open Tuesday, some Wednesday, some Thursday, and some on Friday. And they all close on Sunday with many dealers packing up and heading home. Saturdays are always the busiest days and as an outdoor event, weather always plays a part in the activity. Most fields are open from 8AM – 5PM and there are a variety of parking areas available ranging in price, usually up to $10/day.

There really is something for everyone. If you are looking for furniture, antiques, dishes, glass, jewelry, nostalgia items and everything in between – you will find it here. Social media is a great place to see what people have found before (check out hashtags such as #brimfieldantiqueshow #vintageseller #fleamarketstyle #fleamarketfinds #primitivedecor #vintagefinds #brimfield #thebrimfieldshow)

We do recommend you wear your walking shoes. The fields cover acres and take up more than a mile stretch of Route 20. Each field does have a separate name and each field is made up of different vendors. If you’re just sightseeing and may pick up something on a whim, we suggest a carry bag. However, if you’re really in the shopping mode, we suggest a cart. Some vendors will hold an item after you pay for it, some offer porter services, and some can help you with shipping. However, the cart allows you to grab and go without having something tugging over your shoulder.

As for food and beverage – there are food trucks throughout the event, although we recommend bringing snacks and water (especially if you are there for one of the hotter events).

A few vendors do take credit cards; however, cash is still king at this event. There are a few ATMs located throughout the fields as well, but it is always best to be prepared.

It is an event not to be missed. You may run into famous interior decorators, regional celebrities, even HGTV filming their “Flea Market Flip” episodes.

Our best advice – if you like something, buy it – as it might not be there the next day, wear comfortable shoes, be prepared, and have fun.
